What Is It Like to Work Remotely for One of the Best IT Consultancies in the World?

If I am completely honest, I never imagined that my first professional job would end up being remote, inside an international consultancy, and working for massive companies.

And yes, once again I have to say it: everything started thanks to Salesforce.

Because, honestly, I had just finished university, had only basic programming knowledge, and almost zero real work experience.

Even so, I ended up getting a job that, by the standards of my country and my professional moment, was much better than I had imagined.

And the most curious part is that I did not even really understand where I was getting myself into.

My First Remote Job

After finishing the Salesforce bootcamp, it was finally time to start working.

I signed the contract and the next day something happened that may feel normal to many people, but for me at that time it was a whole experience: a welcome kit arrived at my house.

A corporate laptop, headphones, a notebook, a bottle, and several other accessories.

It may sound simple, but I was just entering the corporate world and professional software development.

I did not even know companies did that kind of thing.

That was when I started to feel that I was entering an environment completely different from everything I had known.

What Does a Software Consultancy Actually Do?

Before continuing, there is something many people outside tech do not fully understand: what is a software consultancy?

Basically, it is a company that brings together professionals specialized in different technologies: developers, architects, analysts, QA engineers, consultants, DevOps engineers, and more.

Then those consultancies work with external clients who need technology teams to build, maintain, or improve their systems.

Those clients can be:

  • banks,
  • insurance companies,
  • retailers,
  • telecoms,
  • startups,
  • international corporations,
  • basically any industry.

In other words, the consultancy provides specialized technology talent to companies running large projects.

When I first entered, all of that was completely new to me.

I did not really understand:

  • how projects worked,
  • how teams were organized,
  • what it meant to work for a client,
  • or how one company could build systems for another giant company.

But little by little, I started to understand how the corporate tech industry really works.

The Impact of My First Client

And then came another reality check.

My first client was one of the biggest insurance companies in my country.

I still remember thinking:

“Am I really going to work for a company like that?”

Because studying programming at university is one thing.

Entering real projects where there are:

  • real users,
  • critical systems,
  • business processes,
  • huge operations,
  • and software that literally moves millions,

is something very different.

That was when I understood that the work I was doing had real impact.

Working for a Top Global Consultancy

During onboarding they told me the company I had joined was an important consultancy.

But when I looked into it more carefully, I discovered it was part of the top group of largest technology consultancies in the world.

And honestly, I never imagined I would work in something like that so early, especially because I was only just starting my career.

What Surprised Me Most About the Corporate Tech World

I think one of the things that impressed me the most was the level of organization and professionalism.

Everything had processes.

And when I say everything, I mean everything.

Security

Accesses and credentials had multiple layers of authentication and security.

There were strict policies for:

  • access,
  • environments,
  • devices,
  • data,
  • permissions,
  • connections,
  • and information handling.

That is when I understood why large companies take technology security so seriously.

Quality Standards

I was also surprised by the level of expectations.

Projects were not simply: “make it work.”

There were:

  • validations,
  • reviews,
  • methodologies,
  • documentation,
  • processes,
  • ceremonies,
  • controls,
  • environments,
  • and fairly high standards.

And while all of that can feel overwhelming at first, later you understand why it exists.

Something I Still Value a Lot

There is something I still value deeply: the company was willing to bet on young talent.

They invested in training people from scratch.

Because if that consultancy had not funded bootcamps to teach technologies like Salesforce, many people, myself included, would probably never have had access to this world so quickly.

That is something I still respect a lot.

The Work Benefits Also Surprised Me

I am not going to lie. For someone who was just starting, all of that was new:

  • remote work,
  • a corporate laptop,
  • benefits,
  • flexible schedules,
  • days off,
  • gifts,
  • summer hours,
  • training,
  • corporate culture.

And yes, maybe for people with more experience that is normal.

But when you come from basically starting from zero, it makes an impact.

In fact, thanks to that job I managed to become independent for the first time.

And again, yes, a big part of that was thanks to Salesforce.

The Reality Nobody Sees from the Outside

Many people look at the tech industry from the outside and think only about:

  • high salaries,
  • remote work,
  • benefits,
  • nice laptops,
  • or working from home.

But reality also includes:

  • pressure,
  • meetings,
  • constant learning,
  • responsibility,
  • deadlines,
  • complex problems,
  • demanding clients,
  • and huge projects.

Even so, it was honestly an experience that opened my mind a lot to how the enterprise technology world really works.

Final Reflection

When I was at university, I never imagined I would end up working remotely for large projects and international companies.

I certainly never thought that a technology I did not even know would completely change my professional path.

And although Salesforce was not what I was looking for at first, it ended up being the door into an industry that changed my professional life much more than I expected.
