The Habit That Changed My Life

The Habit That Changed My Life

If I had to recommend a single habit that truly changed my life, it would probably be this one:

reading.

And honestly, I think for a long time I completely underestimated the power of reading.

Because when we hear the word “reading,” we often think of something boring, heavy, or even unnecessary.

But over time I understood something important:

A book can change the way you see the world.

And when the way you think changes, your decisions change too.

And when your decisions change, eventually your life changes as well.

I Never Had the Habit of Reading

One curious thing is that I did not grow up surrounded by books.

At home there was never a strong reading culture.

I never saw my parents reading constantly or talking about authors or philosophy.

In fact, for many years I thought reading was something that only “smart people did.”

And honestly, finishing an entire book felt impossible.

I remember looking at big books and thinking:

“How can someone finish that many pages?”

I had no patience.

No habit.

And I did not really understand the value it could have.

The Moment I Started Looking for Answers

There was a stage in my life when I honestly felt lost.

I had too many questions:

  • about my future,
  • about money,
  • about purpose,
  • about growth,
  • about how to improve my life.

And the more I looked for answers on social media or in quick videos, the more confused I became.

Because the internet is full of information.

But not all information truly transforms you.

Until one day I heard something very simple:

“If you want to change your life, start reading.”

And even though it sounded cliché, I decided to try.

Without imagining that it would end up becoming one of the most important habits of my life.

Books Helped Me Open My Mind

And I want to be completely honest:

I probably would not be the same person today if I had never started reading.

Because thanks to books, I discovered ideas I had never questioned before.

I read about:

  • personal development,
  • habits,
  • finance,
  • business,
  • communication,
  • philosophy,
  • meditation,
  • psychology,
  • and personal growth.

And little by little I started feeling something strange:

My way of thinking was changing.

Reading Does Not Only Give You Information

I think this is one of the biggest mistakes people make about reading.

They think reading only helps you accumulate information.

But honestly, I believe the real value of reading is something else:

Books expand your perspective.

They allow you to see:

  • problems from another angle,
  • different experiences,
  • new ideas,
  • other people’s mistakes,
  • life philosophies,
  • and different ways of understanding the world.

Sometimes a single sentence in a book can stay with you for years.

The Problem with Living Only with Our Own Ideas

Many times we live trapped inside our own mind.

With our problems.

Our fears.

Our limitations.

And when we do not expose our mind to new ideas, we end up believing that our current way of seeing the world is the only possible one.

That is where books can help you a lot.

Because in a certain way, reading is like having a conversation with people who spent years of their lives trying to understand something.

The Books That Impacted Me the Most

There are many, but some of the ones that marked my life the most were:

  • The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People — Stephen R. Covey
  • How to Win Friends and Influence People — Dale Carnegie
  • Atomic Habits — James Clear

And even though there are now thousands of summaries on TikTok or YouTube, honestly, it does not feel the same.

Because reading an entire book forces you to slow down, reflect, and think more deeply.

The Habit That Transformed My Mindset the Most

If I am honest, reading was one of the first habits that truly began transforming my life from the inside out.

Because before that, I wanted to change external results:

  • money,
  • work,
  • success,
  • recognition.

But books helped me understand something important:

First change the way you think, and then many of your decisions will change.

And even though the process was not fast, it was deep.

Reading Also Changed the Way I Saw Myself

Before, I thought many things simply “were not for me.”

But the more I read, the more I understood that:

  • many skills can be developed,
  • many limitations are mental,
  • and personal growth requires intention.

Reading helped me develop:

  • curiosity,
  • discipline,
  • critical thinking,
  • introspection,
  • and a much more open mindset.

If You Feel Lost Today…

Honestly, if you are going through a stage where:

  • you feel stuck,
  • confused,
  • directionless,
  • or you are searching for answers,

then one of the best pieces of advice I could give you is this:

start reading.

Not because a book will magically solve your life.

But because it can help you better understand what you are living through.

Sometimes the answers we are looking for were already thought, written, and lived by other people before us.

Final Reflection

Today I still think reading was one of the most important habits I have developed in my life.

Because it did not just help me learn new things.

It helped me change the way I think.

And honestly, I believe that is often the true beginning of any important transformation.

Because when you expand your mind, you also expand the possibilities of the life you can build.
